Confessions of an Economic Hitman - John Perkins : ఒక దళారీ పశ్చాత్తాపం - కొణతం దిలీప్

మూడేళ్ళ క్రితం HRF వాళ్ళు ముద్రించిన "విస్తాపన-విధ్వంసం" అనే పుస్తకం చదివాను. అందులో అభివృద్ధి పేరిట, సెజ్ ల పేరిట ఆది వాసీలకు, పేద ప్రజలకు, సహజ వనరులకు జరుగుతున్న అన్యాయం గురించి కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్టు రాసారు. నన్ను, నా ఆలోచనలని  ఎంతగానో ప్రభావితం చేసిన పుస్తకాల్లో అది ఒకటి. మన చుట్టూ జరుగుతోన్న (జరుగుతోందని మనం అనుకుంటున్న) అభివృద్ధి అనే నాణేనికి మరో వేపు ఏముందో తెలుస్తుంది ఈ పుస్తకం చదివాక.

ఇప్పుడు ఈ పుస్తకం "ఒక దళారీ పశ్చాత్తాపం" కూడా అదే కోవలోనికి వస్తుంది. HRF వాళ్ళ పుస్తకం మన రాష్ట్రం లో జరుగుతున్న దోపిడీ గురించి రాస్తే, ఈ పుస్తకం లో ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా జరుగుతున్న దోపిడీ గురించి రాసారు. అగ్ర రాజ్యంగా వెలుగుతోన్న అమెరికా చేసిన దురాగతాలను, అభివృద్ధి ముసుగులో మానవాళికి అది చేస్తున్న ద్రోహం గురించి ఈ పుస్తకం లో రాసారు.

ఈ పుస్తక రచయిత జాన్ పెర్కిన్స్ అమెరికా తరపున నియమించబడ్డ ఒక ఎకనామిక్ హిట్ మాన్ (ఇలాంటి ఒక పదం ఉంటుందని ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారానే తెల్సింది నాకు). చమురు నిక్షేపాలు పుష్కలంగా ఉన్న వెనుజులా, ఈక్వడార్, ఇరాన్, ఇరాక్, ఇండోనేసియా లాంటి దేశాల్లోని ప్రభుత్వాలని, ప్రజలని అభివృద్ధి పేరిట మభ్యపెట్టి ఆయా దేశాలు ఎప్పటికీ తీర్చలేని రుణాలిచ్చి వారిని తమకి (అమెరికా కి ) బానిసల్లా మార్చే ప్రక్రియ కోసం నియమింపబడ్డ వారే ఈ దళారులు. ఒకప్పుడు అమెరికా లో వుండిన బానిసత్వానికి ఇప్పుడు నాగరీకత, అభివృద్ధి పేరు చెప్పి కొత్త ముసుగు తొడుగుతున్నారు. అమెరికా పాటిస్తున్న రెండు నాల్కల ధోరణిని నగ్నంగా మన ముందు నిలబెడుతుంది ఈ పుస్తకం. గ్లోబల్ సామ్రాజ్య స్థాపన లో భాగంగా కార్పోరేట్ స్వామ్యం పీడిత దేశాలని ఎంత తెలివిగా దోచుకుంటుందో రచయిత ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారా చెప్పారు. ఈ దోపిడీలో భాగం గా మనం (మానవాళి) కోల్పోయిన సహజ (నదులూ, అడవులు), మానవ వనరులు, సంస్కృతులు, జీవ జాతుల గురించి తెల్సుకుంటూ వుంటే రేపటి తరానికి మనం ఏమి మిగిల్చి ఇస్తున్నాం అన్న ఆలోచన రాక మానదు. దీని గురించి సామాన్య ప్రజలమయిన మనం చేయగలిగినది ఏముంది అన్న ప్రశ్నకి సమాధానం ఏమిటి?

170 పేజీల ఈ పుస్తకం చదవడానికి నాకు రెండు వారాలు పట్టింది. ఇందులో రాసిన ఏ ఒక్క విషయం గురించి నాకు ఇంతకు ముందు ఎలాంటి అవగాహన లేకపోవడమే కారణం. ఇప్పటి వరకూ ప్రపంచం లో ఏ దేశం అయినా కరెన్సీ ని ముద్రించుకోవడానికి అందుకు సరిపడా బంగారు నిలువలనో, లేక వనరులనో చూపించాలని విన్నాను. కానీ అమెరికా అలాంటి రూల్ ఏదీ పాటించకుండా కరెన్సీ ని ముద్రించి ప్రపంచ దేశాలకి అప్పులిస్తుందని ఇందులో చదివి ఆశ్చర్యపోయాను. ఇదేమి న్యాయం. ఎవరూ అడగరా?

తెలుగు అనువాదం చాలా సరళంగా సాగింది. మానవాళి విధ్వంసానికి కారణమయ్యే  ఈ అభివృద్ధి (???) అనే ఊబిలో మనం రోజు రోజుకీ ఎలా కూరుకుపోతున్నామో తెల్సుకోవాలంటే ఈ పుస్తకం చదివి తీరాల్సిందే.

History of India – Romila Thapar

This book details the history of India in ancient and medieval ages. It starts with the Iron age civilization and ends with the declination of Mughal empire in the 18th century after the arrival of British. In the very first chapter the author describes how man in Iron age transformed from a food gatherer to a food producer.

Indus valley /Sind civilization, Mohenjadaro-Harappa cities and their infrastructure, Aryan civilization are described in the next few chapters. The emergence and declination of some famous empires like Magadha, Mourya, Gupta, Pallava, Chola, Chera, Pandya, Satavaahana, Mughal etc are detailed. The social, cultural, economical, political and geographical conditions prevalent in each era are discussed. Some religious aspects in Buddhism, Jainism and Islam are also presented.

This book is just about 178 pages, but it gives you an overall picture of entire history of ancient and medieval India. A delighful read for history lovers

Ditavu Gundelu – Dmitry Medvedev – Uppala Lakshama Rao

I don’t  know the English title of this original version, this book is written by Russian author Dmitry Medvedev (not sure whether he is the one who’s the current President of Russia) and the telugu translation from English was done by Uppala Lakshmana Rao.


Soviet Russia has a great history for its fight aganist the Naazees. This’s the story of Russian Gourilla war fighters during the second world war. It gives you an insight of the events in the gourilla war that took place in the Saarni forest areas and Ukranian towns during the years 1942-1948.

I am not very good at reading and memorizing the Russian names and this book has too many characters, so it was a tough read for me memorizing the names,places and events and reading further. Otherwise the transalation is good.

Chengiz Khan – Tenneti Suri

  I’m a huge fan of historical books which depict the social, political, geographical and cultural scenarios of ancient civilizations. But the books of this genre which I’ve come across so far are non-fictions. Last year when I was having a chat with my aunt about these kinda books she suddenly asked me if I’d read about Chengiz Khan. I’ve heard his name a few times before, but was not aware of his story. Then she told me about this book ‘Chengiz Khan’ penned by Thenneti Suri.

All the incidents in this book are adapted from Henry H.Howorth’s Mongol history (from author’s note). It takes you to a different world of the early Mongolian civilization in Gobi. Chengiz khan (originally named as Temujin), who’s born to the cheiftain of an ordinary mongolian nomadic tribe in the Gobi desert emerges as the founder of the great Mongolian empire which  turns out to be the largest empire in history.This forms the basic storyline. It’s not an easy task to gather bits and pieces of information from history and entwine them into an enchanting fictious-novel. The author did an excellent job. For the first 10 pages or so  the language seems to be a little bit complex, but as you move on it gets easier. This is definitely not a casual or timepass read. If you are interested in historic novels, you’ll surely love this.
