Daughter of Fortune - Isabel Allende

This is the story of a young woman Eliza Sommers born to a Chilean mother and British Father. She's raised as an orphan by a Victorian spinster Rose and her brother Jeremy. They live in one of the British colonies in Chile. Eliza falls in love with Joaquin Andieta, a clerk who works for Jeremy. They maintain a secret relationship and eventually Eliza gets pregnant. Joaquin leaves to California falling prey to the gold rush in North America in 1840's. Eliza decides to follow him, seeking help from a chinese doctor Tao Chein, she secretly boards a ship set to travel to SFO.

The rest of the story is all about her journey through the rough and tumble world full of newly arrived inhabitants driven crazy by gold fever. Her journey in search of love transforms into a conquest of independence and freedom.

A story full of passion, adventure, violence and immoral sex activities. A good read, not excellent though.

బెంగాలి నవలలు, కథలు - 1

దేవదాసు - శరత్ - ఈ కథ అందరికీ తెలిసిందే. పాతదో, కొత్తదో 'దేవదాసు' సినిమా చూడని వాళ్ళు వుండరేమో. అయితే ఈ సినిమా కి మూలమయిన నవల ఎలా వుంటుందో చదవాలన్న కోరిక నాకెప్పటి నుండో ఉండింది. నవల చదువుతున్నంత సేపు ఈ మధ్యే చూసిన హిందీ 'దేవదాసు' గుర్తొస్తూనే వుంది. సినిమాకి, నవల కి పెద్ద తేడా ఏమీ లేదు. కాకపోతే ఇప్పటి తరం వాళ్లకి ఆనాటి రచన చదవడం కంటే సినిమా చూస్తేనే నచ్చుతుందేమో. శరత్ రచనా శైలి మాత్రం చదివింపచేసేలా వుంది.

మజిలీ  దీదీ - శరత్ - ఇందులో మూడు కథలున్నాయి, మజిలి దీదీ, అణిగిన అహంకారం, కారుచీకటిలో కాంతిరేఖ - మొదటి కథ మజిలి దీదీ నచ్చింది నాకు. తల్లిని తండ్రిని పోగొట్టుకుని అనాధ అయిన కేప్టో సవతి సోదరి అయిన కాదంబిని పంచన చేరతాడు. వారి నిరాదరణకు గురి అయిన కేప్టో ని పక్కనే ఉంటున్న కాదంబిని తోడికోడలయిన హేమాంగిని అక్కున చేర్చుకుంటుంది. ఇది కిట్టని కాదంబిని హేమాంగి తో గొడవకి దిగడం తో రెండు కుటుంబాల మధ్య అంతకు ముందు నుండి వున్న మనస్పర్ధలు హెచ్చుతాయి. చివరకు హేమాంగిని ఇల్లు వదిలి వెళ్ళవలసిన పరిస్థితి వస్తుంది. అయినా సరే తను నమ్మిన దారిలో నడవడం కోసం భర్తని ఎదిరించి పోరాడి చివరకు కేప్టో ని ఆదరించేందుకు భర్త ని ఒప్పిస్తుంది. ఇక మిగతా రెండు కథలు పెద్దగా నచ్చలేదు. ఈ కథలన్నిటి లోనూ ఆనాటి బెంగాల్ రాష్ట్రం లోని జమిందారి పద్ధతులు, సంప్రదాయాలు, సంస్కృతి కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్టు వర్ణించారు రచయిత.

విష వృక్షం - బంకించంద్ర చటర్జీ - 'వందేమాతరం' రాసిన బంకింబాబు కలం నుండి జారువాలిన నవల ఇది. కుంద అనే ఒక అందమయిన యువతి జీవితం గురించిన కథ ఇది. అనాధ అయిన ఆమెను నాగేంద్రుడు (ఒక జమిందారు) చేరదీస్తాడు. మొదట్లో ఆమె పట్ల కేవలం జాలితో వ్యవహరించిన అతను కొద్ది రోజులకి ఆమెని ప్రేమించడం (ప్రేమించానని అనుకోవడం) మొదలు పెడతాడు. విషయం తెల్సిన అతని భార్య సూర్యముఖి పెద్ద మనసు తో ఇద్దరికీ పెళ్లి జరిపిస్తుంది. తర్వాత ఇల్లు వదిలి వెళ్ళిపోతుంది. కానీ కొద్ది రోజులకే నాగేంద్రుడు తనకు కుంద మీద వున్నది ప్రేమ కాదు అన్న విషయం గుర్తించి భార్య ని వెతుకుతూ తనూ ఇల్లు వదిలి వెళ్ళిపోతాడు. చివరికి భార్య భర్తలు కలుస్తారు కానీ కుంద ఒంటరి అయిపోతుంది. తర్వాత ఆమె ఏమయింది అనేది ముగింపు. ఈ కథ నాకేమీ నచ్చలేదు.

మొత్తానికి నేను చదివిన మూడు పుస్తకాలు నన్ను కొంచెం నిరాశ పరిచాయనే చెప్పాలి. చాలా దశాబ్దాల క్రితం నాటి రచనలు కాబట్టి నా బుర్ర కి సరిగ్గా ఎక్కలేదేమో మరి. అయినా సరే, ఇంకో మూడు పుస్తకాలున్నాయి (శరత్, బంకింబాబు వి)..అవి కూడా చదివేస్తాను.

విరాట్ - సైఫాన్ త్స్వైక్ - పొనుగోటి కృష్ణారెడ్డి

సైఫాన్ త్స్వైక్ ఆస్ట్రియా లో జన్మించిన ఒక సుప్రసిద్ధ రచయిత. తత్త్వశాస్త్రం అంటే ఎంతో మక్కువ కలిగిన ఆయన భారతీయ గ్రంధాలను, వేదాలను, ఉపనిషత్తులను, పురాణాలని అధ్యయనం చేసారు. ఈ పుస్తకం చదువుతున్నంత సేపు ఇది ఒక విదేశీ రచయిత కలం నుండి వెలువడింది అన్న అభిప్రాయం కలగదు మనకి. 60 - 70  పేజీల ఈ చిన్ని పుస్తకంలో జీవిత పరమార్ధం ఇమిడి వుంది.

విరాట్ అనే పేరుగల ఒక ధీరుడు ఒకానొక రాజ్యంలో ఉంటాడు. అతను తన జీవితంలో ఎదుర్కొన్న పరిస్థితులు, సంఘటనల వలన ఎలాంటి నిర్ణయాలు తీసుకున్నాడు, దాని వలన అతని జీవిత గమనం ఏ విధంగా మారింది, అతని ఆలోచనా దృక్పదం ఎలా సాగింది, చివరికి అతను అర్ధం చేసుకున్న తత్త్వం ఏమిటి అన్నదే ఈ పుస్తక సారాంశం. అనువాదం కూడా చాలా సరళంగా వుంది చదవడానికి ఎంతో తేలికగా వుంది. ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా ఈ పుస్తకం నలభై బాషల్లోకి translate చేయబడిందిట.

డేగ రెక్కల చప్పుడు - యండమూరి వీరేంద్రనాథ్

 

నేను చదివిన పుస్తకాలలో నాకు మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ చదవాలనిపించే పుస్తకాల్లో యండమూరి వీరేంద్రనాథ్ గారి నవలలు చాలా వున్నాయి. ఈయన నవలల్లో నేను మొట్ట మొదట చదివింది "నల్లంచు తెల్ల చీర". అప్పటి నుండి ఆయన నవలల్లో మూడు నాలుగు పుస్తకాలు తప్ప మిగతావి ఏవీ  వదిలిపెట్టకుండా చదివేసాను. దొరికినంత వరకూ కొని దాచుకున్నాను కూడా. ఈయన రాసిన కాసనోవ 99 , తులసి దళం, అష్టా వక్ర లాంటి థ్రిల్లర్స్ తెలుగులో మరే రచయిత ఇంత ఆకట్టుకునేలా రాయలేరేమో అనిపిస్తుంది. ఈయన ఇంగ్లీష్ నవలల నుండి కాపీ చేస్తారని, రచనా స్వేచ్చ ఎక్కువ తీసుకుంటారని అంటారు కానీ నేను ఇంగ్లీష్ నవలలు ఎక్కువ చదవలేదు కాబాట్టి నాకు అలా ఏమీ అనిపించదు. ఈయన రాసిన నవలలు అన్నిటి గురించి ఒక పోస్ట్ రాయాలని అనుకుంటున్నాను కానీ కుదరటం లేదు.

ఈ నవల "డేగ రెక్కల చప్పుడు" సాక్షి ఆదివారం edition లో సీరియల్ గా వచ్చినప్పుడు నేను కావాలనే చదవలేదు. ఎందుకంటే ఇలాంటి సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్స్ ఏకబిగిన చదివేయ్యాలి నేను. వారం వారం ఎదురు చూడటం నా వల్ల కాని పని. అందుకే నవలగా వచ్చాక చదివాను. ఇంతకు ముందు ఈయన రాసిన "ఒక వర్షాకాలపు సాయంత్రం" అనే నవల లోని కథకి, ఈ నవలలోని కథకీ దగ్గరి పోలికలు వున్నాయి. అయితే రెండూ వేటికవే బాగున్నాయి.

ఈ కథ విషయానికి వస్తే రామకృష్ణ శాస్త్రి భారత సైన్యం లో పని చేసిన ఒక మాజీ ఉద్యోగి. నరనరాన దేశభక్తి ని జీర్ణించుకున్న అసలు సిసలు సిపాయి. తల్లి తండ్రి ని పోగొట్టుకున్న ఇతనికి ఉన్న ఏకైక తోడు ప్రేమించిన అమ్మాయి వైదేహి. అనుకోని పరిస్థితుల్లో అల్-ఖైదా దృష్టి ఇతని మీద పడుతుంది. వాళ్ళకి అవసరమయిన ఒక ఫైల్ కోసం ఇతన్ని ఉపయోగించుకోవాలనుకుంటారు. ఈ విషయం అతనికి ఆఖరి నిమిషంలో తెలుస్తుంది. వాళ్ళు అనుకున్న పని పూర్తి చేసి వాళ్లకి సహాయపడతాడు. దేశం కోసం ప్రాణాలు సైతం లెక్క చెయ్యని రామకృష్ణ ఎందుకు ఈ పని చేసాడు, అతని అసలు mission  ఏంటి అన్నది అసలు కథాంశం. ఇందులో మొదటి భాగం అంతా ఆఫ్ఘనిస్తాన్ భౌగోళిక, చారిత్రక నేపధ్యం, తాలిబాన్ల ఆవిర్భావం, ఆఫ్ఘనిస్తాన్ లోని గిరిజన తెగల ఆచార వ్యవహారాలూ,రష్యా-అమెరికాల మధ్య నలిగిపోయిన ఆఫ్ఘన్ పౌరుల హక్కుల గురించి వుంటుంది. 

స్వార్థపూరిత రాజకీయ నాయకుల ఎత్తుగడలనీ, మత చాంధస వాదుల మూర్ఖపు ఆలోచనలనీ, సామన్యుల బ్రతుకులని నేల రాస్తున్న ఉగ్రవాద సంస్థల అరాచకత్వాన్నీ, వాటికి కొమ్ము కాచే దేశాధినేతల కుయుక్తులనీ, సమాజంలో పాతుకు పోయిన స్వార్థాన్ని, కరడు గట్టిన మానవత్వాన్ని కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్టుగా చూపించారు. రచనా స్వేచ్చ ఎక్కువగా తీసుకున్నప్పటికీ నవల మొత్తం చదివాక అవసరమే అనిపిస్తుంది. కొన్ని యథార్థ సంఘటనలు, కొన్ని కల్పితాలు కలగలిపి రాసిన ఈ పుస్తకం ప్రస్తుతం ప్రపంచాన్ని గడగడలాడిస్తున్న ఉగ్రవాద కలాపాలకు అద్దం పడుతుంది.

తన్హాయి - కల్పనా రెంటాల

ప్రేమ ని గురించి ఎంతో మంది ఎన్నో రకాలుగా నిర్వచించారు. అయితే ఎవరు ఎన్ని చెప్పినా ప్రేమ కి ఇదే సరయిన అర్ధం అని ఖచ్చితంగా ఎవరూ చెప్పలేరు. మన సమాజం లో ఎన్నో రకాల ప్రేమలు ఆమోదించబడతాయి కానీ వేరు వేరుగా  పెళ్ళయిన ఇద్దరు వ్యక్తుల మధ్య ప్రేమ అంటే మాత్రం అందరూ నిరసిస్తారు. స్త్రీ-పురుషుల మధ్య ఏర్పడే ప్రేమలో శారీరక సంబంధానికి చోటు వుండే అవకాశం వలననేమో ఇలాంటి ప్రేమలు ఎవరూ ఒప్పుకోరు. పెళ్ళయిన ఇద్దరు వ్యక్తుల మధ్య ఒక స్నేహంగా మొదలయిన పరిచయం క్రమంగా పెరిగి ప్రేమగా మారి ఇద్దరి కుటుంబాలను, జీవితాలను ఎంత ప్రభావితం చేస్తుందో, వాళ్ళ మానసిక సంఘర్షణ ఎలా వుంటుందో అనేదే ఈ కథాంశం.

ఈ కథ అంతా అమెరికా లో రెండు తెలుగు కుటుంబాల మధ్య జరుగుతుంది. కల్హార-చైతన్య దంపతులకు ముద్దులొలికే పాప మేఘన. కౌశిక్-మృదుల దంపతులకు తుషార్ అనే ఏడేళ్ళ బాబు ఉంటాడు. రెండు కుటుంబాలు టెక్సాస్ రాష్ట్రం లోని హ్యూస్టన్ పట్టణంలో వుంటాయి. రెండు జంటలూ ఇండియాలో మధ్య తరగతి కుటుంబాలకి చెందిన వారు. ఉన్నత చదువులు చదువుకుని మంచి ఉద్యోగాలు చేస్తూ అమెరికాలో ప్రశాంతమయిన జీవితం గడుపుతుంటారు.ఎవరికీ భాగస్వాముల మీద ఎలాంటి కంప్లైంట్స్ వుండవు (చిన్న చిన్న గొడవలు తప్ప). ఒక ప్రయాణంలో కల్హార-కౌశిక్ మధ్య పరిచయం ఏర్పడుతుంది. తొలి చూపులోనే ఒకరికి ఒకరు నచ్చుతారు. మొదట స్నేహితులుగా వుందామనుకున్న వారిద్దరూ క్రమేణా ఒకరిని విడిచి ఒకరు వుండలేనంతగా దగ్గరవుతారు. అయితే తమ ప్రేమ కోసం వాళ్ళ వాళ్ళ కుటుంబాలను వదులుకోవాలన్న ఆలోచన వుండదు. వీళ్ళ ప్రేమ విషయం తెల్సిన చైతన్య, మృదుల లు ఎలా స్పందించారు, చివరికి కల్హార-కౌశిక్ ల మధ్య ప్రేమ ఎలా నిలిచిందీ, ఈ క్రమం లో నలుగురూ పడిన మానసిక సంఘర్షణ ని రచయిత్రి ఎంతో హృద్యంగా వర్ణించారు.

ఈ నవల చదివాక ప్రతి పెళ్ళయిన వ్యక్తి ఇందులో వున్న ముఖ్య పాత్రలలో ఏదో ఒక దానిలో తమని తాము identify చేసుకోగలరు. ఇందులో కథ కంటే కూడా పాత్రధారుల మానసిక సంఘర్షణ ను ఎక్కువ హైలైట్ చేసారు. కొన్ని వాఖ్యాలయితే నాకు చాలా చాలా నచ్చాయి,

అశాంతికి కారణం అసంతృప్తి

మనసు మాట వినేవారికి ఉన్నంత నరకం మరోటి వుండదు (ఈ మాట నాకు సరిగ్గా గుర్తు రాట్లేదు. పుస్తకం ఏమో ప్రస్తుతం నా దగ్గర లేదు)

స్నేహం, ప్రేమ అందరి పట్ల ఒకేలా వుండదు. ఒకరి దగ్గర ప్రవర్తించినట్టు, ఫీల్ అయినట్టు మరొకరి దగ్గర ఫీల్ అవలేము, ప్రతి స్నేహం, ప్రేమ వేటికవే విభిన్నం.

ఒక పని చేయాలని తీవ్రంగా అనిపించినప్పుడు ఆ పని చెయ్యడం తప్పు కాదు అని మనసు మనకి అనుకూలంగా నచ్చ చెప్తుంది. అది గుర్తించకపోతే మనసు వేసే ట్రాప్ లో చిక్కుకోక తప్పదు.

ఇంకా ఇలాంటివెన్నో వున్నాయి పుస్తకం నిండా. మొదట సాధారణంగా మొదలయిన కథ లోతుకి వెళ్ళే కొద్దీ పాత్రలన్నీ సజీవంగా మన కళ్ళెదుట నిలిచాయనిపిస్తుంది. ఆ ప్రాత్రల సంఘర్షణలో మన మనసూ, మెదడూ కూడా ఒక భాగమయిపోతాయి. కథాంశం విన్న తర్వాత ఇది అక్రమ సంబంధాలను ప్రోత్సహించేదిగా ఉంటుందేమో అనిపిస్తుంది. కానీ చదివే కొద్దీ తమకే తెలీకుండా పీకల్లోతు ప్రేమలో పడిపోయిన ఇద్దరు బాధ్యాతాయుతమయిన వ్యక్తుల మానసిక స్థితి కి ఇది సజీవ రూపంగా నిలుస్తుంది. మ్యారేజ్ counselling బుక్ లా అనిపించింది నాకయితే.

ఇంత మంచి నవలను అందించిన కల్పన గారికి అభినందనలు.

అధో జగత్ సహోదరి - అక్కినేని కుటుంబరావు

ఇది ఒక కన్నీటి గాధ. దుర్గ అనే ఒక పేదింటి అమ్మాయి ఒక మోసగాడి చేతిలో చిక్కి, వ్యభిచార కూపంలో ఇరుక్కుని, రకరకాల పరిస్థితుల్లో, రకరకాల మనషులు మధ్య దుర్భరమయిన జీవితాన్ని గడిపి, అత్యంత దురద్రుష్టకరమయిన స్థితిలో తనువు చాలించడం ఈ కథ యొక్క సారాంశం. రచయిత కి సమాజం లో ఉన్న ఒక నీచ సంస్కృతి పట్ల ఉన్న కసి చాలా చోట్ల వ్యక్తమవుతుంది.

కుటుంబరావు గారి పుస్తకాలు ఇంతకు ముందెప్పుడూ చదవలేదు. ఇదే మొదటిది, ఇక ఇదే ఆఖరుది కూడా :)

Zero Percentile - Neeraj Chhibba

This is the story of a smart, intelligent boy, Pankaj, who belongs to a middle class punjabi family living in Delhi during 1990s. Pankaj aims to get  into an IIT, but due to an unfortunate reason, he cannot make it. So he proceeds to a Russian city, Volvograd,  to pursue his engineering degree. And the rest of the story is all about Pankaj's struggle and survival in the foreign land.

The story is divided into 3 parts.

First part is set in Delhi, and is all about Pankaj's birth, family,childhood, school friends and his struggle to get into an IIT and eventually not getting through it.

Second part is about his college life in Russia. The backdrop is refreshing and the protagonist's struggle is very well narrated. Pankaj's determination, hardwork and practicality are very much inspiring.

The third and the last part focuses on his love life. The story has a happy ending, leaving a feel-good feeling :)

An easy-breezy read.

Revolution 2020 - Chetan Bhagat

Revolution 2020 is Chetan Bhagat's fifth book. The tag line is 'Love.Corruption.Ambition' - the story revolves around these words and the term 'Revolution 2020' has nothing to do with the main plot or may be it would be more appropriate to say that R2020 concept hasn't been focussed well in the narration.

Coming to the plot, the story takes place in the holy city of Varanasi. Gopal,Raghav and Aarti are childhood friends. Gopal comes from a lower middle class family, he loses his mother at the age of four. His father is a school teacher, he wants Gopal to be an engineer. But Gopal is not very focussed towards his career and all he wants to become, is a rich person. Raghav is a smart, intelligent boy from a well-to-do family. Aarti belongs to an elite class family, she's beautiful, caring and a happy-go-lucky person.

As the three friends grow up, Gopal falls in love with Aarti. But Aarti treats Gopal as her best friend and she has no other feelings for him. Raghav is totally into acedamics, he manages to crack JEE in the first attempt itself. Gopal, not being able to get through the entrance exams, is forced by his father to make a second attempt. So he leaves his hometown to join a coaching centre in another town.  By the time he returns to Varanasi, Aarti and Raghav are in love.

Gopal loses his father, he faces an emotional and financial turmoil, too much for his age. His plans to join in a pvt engineering college in Varanasi gets him into touch with few people who change his course of life. With some ancestral property in hand, his life takes a U turn and within a span of three years he becomes the director of an Engineering College. Raghav after completing his engineering, joins in a local news paper office as a daily reporter. He aims to bring a revolution against the corruption prevailing in the society. Aarti, after her graduation secures a job.

The triangular love story takes some interesting turns from this point and the ending is not a very pleasant one, but I found it apt. The entire story is narrated from Gopal's point of view.His narration is down-to-earth with an average boy's outlook towards life, love and ambition. Apart from the love track, the book provides an insight into the corruption in our education system and the plight of average students to get through the entrance examinations to fullfill their parents' dreams. 

There are no lol-moments in this book as compared to CB's previous release 'Two States'. The writing style is similar to his earlier releases and it's an easy breezy read. And finally, this story has all the elements to be adapted into a bollywood movie :)

I'm not twenty four... - Sachin Garg

An MDI graduate's book bearing a cover page with a girl's legs clad in blue jeans and red stilettos and with a title 'I'm not 24..I've been 19 for 5 years'...What do one expect the story to be about? Well, I thought it would a fictious love story with an IIM backdrop. But it's not so.

This is the story of a Delhi based girl, Saumya Kapoor, an MBA graduate from MDI, Gurgaon. Having been brought up in a high-fi society, her life revolves around shopping malls, coffee shops and handsome guys. She like any other metropolitan girl expects to be placed in a corporate company after her studies. However, a confusion arises due to her unisexual name and she gets into a reputed steel company which is located in a remote village, Toranagallu in Northern Karnataka. Though she's not comfortable with the idea of staying away from city life, family and friends she decides to accept the job.

Once she lands in Toranagallu, she loves the place instantaneously. During her induction period she meets Shubrodeep Shyam Chaudary at Hampi. Shubro leads a nomadic life style, loves weed and beer more than anything else. His decision to lead a life based on a 'move-on' theory takes him through different parts of the world and now he's in Hampi for 90 days.Suamya gets attracted to Shubro's looks. After partying with a couple of other friends in a bar, she comes back to Toranagallu.

Her job profile is an emotionally stressful one and after some horryfying experiences she decides to quit after the 3 month notice period. It's then Shubro enters her life again. He decides to stay in Toranagallu for a period of 90 days as a part of his 'move-on' theory. And the rest  of the story is about how Saumya falls in love with Shubro, despite his weird habits and nomadic lifestyle and how he influences her way of thinking towards life. There's also a story behind Shubro's lifestyle and it unfolds in the last part of the novel. It's highly unconvincing, but still, it feels good when we read stories which are hard to believe and this's one such story.

Expect for the first few chapters it's an interesting read. The writing style is simple and it took less than 4hrs for me to complete.

Heartbreaks & Dreams - Parul A.Mittal

This is the story of  a teenager Tanu. She's an average looking, confident and intelligent girl who has been brought up in a middle class family. She's very much focussed towards her career and determines to pursue her degree in an IIT. She successfully cracks the JEE and gets admitted in the IIT, Delhi. The story starts at this point.

From being a nerd in the beginning, she transforms into the most outstanding student in her batch by the end of her final year.Her struggle and survival through the 4 years of college life in IIT is described in a simple, straigh-forward manner. Her initial feelings of infactuation towards her batchmate and the subsequent determination to overcome it and focus on her studies and the way she dealt with the marriage proposal from her senior are very impressive. Life in IIT (with a skewed sex-ratio, gruelling course work and biased professors) seen through a girl's perspective is quite interesting. 

Not a great read, but definitely a good one. Finished it in one go :)

Right Fit Wrong Shoe - Varsha Dixit

I love to read romantic fiction and this book was recommended to me by my cousin. The title and the genre attracted me and hence I chose to read this book first from my 2012 to-read lot of books.

Nandini Sharma works for an advertising company in Kanpur. Her best friend Sneha Verma too works for the same company. Nandini is a young, bubbly, smart looking girl. The story begins where Nandini comes to know that her company is now a part of Sarin group of industries and her new boss would be Aditya Sarin with whom she had a brief relationship in the past. Due to some unforseen circumstances Nandini breaks up with Aditya (reasons unknown to him) and now he's hell bent on taking revenge for her deed in the past. The rest of the story is about how the lovers realise their true feelings towards each other. The mystery for the break-up unfolds in the last chapter and then a happy ending follows.

Though there's nothing new in the storyline, the fast paced narration and the witty one-liners between Aditya-Nandini and Nandini-Sneha tranforms this book into a page turner. Each chapter is named after a bollywood movie and it reflects the author's penchant for movies which she candidly admits. There are too many acronyms and references to movie dialogues across the novel, thankfully there is a glossary at the end :)

A typical Mills and Boons kind of romantic novel. Also reminded me of Yaddanapoodi Sulochana Rani's romantic novels. A light, breezy read.

Six Suspects – Vikaas Swarup

This crime based fiction is the second book written by the author after his famous debut Q & A.The plot seems to be based on the murder of Jessica Lal, a model in a bar.

Vicky Roy, son of UP’s Home Minister kills a bartender girl Ruby Gill when she refuses to offer him a drink at a party. He gets acquitted by the court through his father’s influence and plans to celebrate a grand party on this occassion at his farmhouse in the outskirts of New Delhi. However, he gets killed in the party. There are six suspects in this case who were present at the party carrying pistols. And then the story takes you to the background of each suspect and their reasons to carry the weapon to the party. Finally the murder mystery unfolds in a surprising way.

Though it appears to be a murder mystery, the narration doesn’t suit to it. This actually is a multi-cultural fictious story. It takes you through different places in India (including the Andamans), the cultures, different classes of people and their mentalities. The narration relates to many  incidents like the Bhopal gas leakage tragedy, Kumbh Mela, Al-quaida blasts etc. Corruption in politics, sex scandals of politicians, bollywood  life and many more issues are described.In short, it gives you a picture of present India.

The story of Larry Page, the American guy seemed to be very unconvincing. Other than this, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The climax reminded me of the film ‘A Wednesday’. A 480 page unputdownable read

Mittoorodi Pusthakam – Naamini Subramanyam Naidu

Naamini – Writer of the Masses…this’s how I feel when I read his books…I’ve read this mittoorodi pusthakam long back, but missed to post the review here…Recently re-read it and hence thought of posting..

This book is a collection of 6 of Naamini’s books published earlier,

Pacchanaaku Saakshiga – I guess this one is the writer’s first work…This’s a collection of short stories narrating his childhood spent in a remote village in Chittoor dt. He belongs to a very poor peasant family. I loved the character of his mother Sinakka.She is an Icon of present day rural women…Hardworking, courageous and also helplessly cunning at times to feed her children.

Sinabba Kathalu – This one again is a collection of short stories…All the stories revolve around his high school life, friends and teachers.

Mittoorodi Kathalu – This is also a collection of stories written after his marriage. So most of them revolve around the couple, their fights, family issues etc

Munikannadi Sedyam – This is a short novel which reminded me of Chandralatha’s ‘Regadi Vitthulu’ (my all time favourite novel based on agricultural revolution). Farming issues in rural areas of Chittoor dt, problems faced by lease farmers(koulu raithulu) etc are narrated in a heart-touching manner.

Pala podugu – This is a short novel describing the life of a very poor family who earns livelihood by selling milk.
Sundaramma kodukulu – This is also a short novel depicting the joint family issues in a poor peasant family, their struggle for existence, fights among the co-sisters and all.

All in all, this total book describes the life style of rural Chittoor dt. Written in the most raw slang of rayalaseema area (including some naatu pacchi boothulu ). I’m used to hear this kind of slang in our villages. So it was an easy read for me. But for those who are not familiar with the slang might find it difficult to understand some words.

Raathi Poolu – C.Sujatha

This is a novel written in the backdrop of corporate world and cine industry. The story revolves around three women, Samantha, Jamuna and Kinnera who belong to ordinary middle class families. They’ve an urge to develop in their respective careers and become financially sound enough to support their families and get hold of all materialistic possessions in the urban culture. This novel describes the emotional struggle that these three women undergo during the process of their settlement in life. How people now a days get attracted to money and success and in this process how the family,human relations, morals and beliefs tend to vanish are described in a heart-touching manner. Title is aptly chosen.


Nice and quick read. Totally loved it

Penkutillu – Kommuri Venugopala Rao

I heard many good reviews about this book, so started with great expectations.


It’s the story of a middle class family in 1960′s (or may be 70′s)….Chidambaram, a lazy n good for nothing fellow lives with his family of 7 including his 4 children. The novel is all about their day-to-day lives,struggle for existence, adjustments and finally ends with a happy note. It reflects the financial and caste discrimination system prevalent at that time.

Good at parts, nothing so great. Just on OK to read.

Gaalikondapuram railway gate – Vamsee

I’m a huge fan of writer/director Vamsee. I’ve read his 3 short story complilations (Maa Pasalapudi Kathalu,  Aanaati Vaana chinukulu and Aaku pacchani Gnaapakam) earlier, totally totally loved them. Coming to  novels, this’s my first read.


It’s a suspense thriller written in the backdrop of the beautiful Araku valley and Dandakaaranya forests. Like in all other Vamsee’s writings I’ve read so far, there is no focus on the storyline in this book too. The narration, characters in the story and the wonderful description of the scenic beauty of the locations captivate the reader.
Light n quick read, recommended for Vamsy’s fans

The Bachelor of Arts – R.K.Narayan

The is the story of a young man, Chandran who lives with his family in the village of Malgudi during the pre-indepence era. The story describes his journey from adolescence to matured adulthood. It’s a short, simple and thought provoking story. Another delightful read from R.K.Narayan.

It’s just about 160 pages, a quick read

The Other Side of Midnight – Sidney Sheldon

The story is about the lives of two women, Noelle Page and Catherine, both from two different parts of the world. Both of them fall in love with the same man, Larry Douglas. Larry betrays Noelle and settles down with Catherine. Noelle plans to take a revenge and in the process she becomes the mistress of Constantin Demeris, a greek business tycoon. The story revolves around these four characters. Very much entertaining and the title is very well chosen. Good timepass read.

But, strictly not for readers under 18 as it has too many steamy lovemaking scenes.

2 States – Chetan Bhagat

I haven’t read Chetan Bhagat’s books so far and ’2 States’ is the first one.

It’s the love story of two IIMA graduates, Krish from Punjab and Ananya from Tamilnadu. It’s all about how they convince each other’s parents to get them married. The cross-state cultural differences lead to some hilarious incidents. I’m impressed with CB’s simple writing style. Though the plot is much predictable with no surprise elements, the narration is pretty good. It’s an enjoyable one time read.

I’ve read in yesterday’s newspaper that this script is going to the Bollywood sets with Shahrukh and Asin as the main leads Would love to watch it on big screen.

Anuhya – Balabhadhrapaathruni Ramani

Anuhya is a smart, beautiful and innocent girl born and brought up in an orthodox family in a village. She’s her grandmom’s pet. She gets married to a foreign returned doctor,Vivek. . This novel deals with Anuhya’s post marriage adjustment blues and her exploration of life to realise what freedom,self-respect and individuality means to a woman. Takes you back to memoirs of your newly married life. Simple and easy to read. I’ve finished it in one go.
