గుల్జార్ కథలు - ధువా

గుల్జార్ పేరు వినగానే నాకు వెంటనే గుర్తొచ్చే రెండు పాటలు, మాచిస్ సినిమాలోని "చప్ప చప్ప చరఖా చలే" , మరోటి రుడాలి సినిమాలోని "దిల్ ఘం ఘం కరే " ఈయన గురించి ఇంకొంచెం తెలిసినదేంటంటే ఎన్నో మంచి సినిమాలకు కథ-కథనం-దర్శ కత్వం అందించి  భారత ప్రభుత్వం నుండి, మరెన్నో సంస్థల నుండి బోల్డన్ని అవార్డులు గెల్చుకున్నారనీను. కానీ బోల్డన్ని మంచి మంచి కథలు రాస్తారని ఈ పుస్తకం చూసే వరకూ తెలీదు. "ధువా" పేరిట కేంద్ర సాహిత్య అకాడమీ నుండి అవార్డులు అందుకున్న గుల్జార్ ఉర్దూ కథలను మృణాళిని గారు తెలుగులోకి తర్జుమా చేసి మనకి అందించారు.

ఇరవయి ఎనిమిది కథల ఈ సంకలనం లో గుల్జార్ గారి సినిమాల్లో (పాటల్లో ) వుండే సున్నితత్వం, సహజత్వం, భిన్నత్వం అన్నీ కనిపిస్తాయి. 1947 లో భారతదేశ విభజన సమయంలో కలిగిన కల్లోలం, సినీ దర్శకుడు బిమల్ రాయ్ గారితో గుల్జార్ అనుభవాలు, బడుగు జీవుల జీవన పోరాటం, ఆధునిక జీవన విధానం ఇలా ఒక్కో కథలో ఒక్కో సబ్జెక్టు వుంది. ఈ కథల్లో కొన్ని కల్పిత గాధలు కాగా మరి కొన్ని రచయిత జీవితంలో జరిగిన సంఘటనల నేపధ్యంలో రాయబడినవి. మూడు కథలు మినహా మిగిలినవన్నీ మూడు-నాలుగు పేజీ ల కథలే.

 నేనింత వరకూ చదివిన పుస్తకాల్లో (కథా సంకలనాలు) ఇన్ని వైవిధ్యమయిన కథలు ఒకే చోట వుండటం గమనించలేదు. ఇక మృణాళిని గారి అనువాదం గురించి చెప్పనే అక్కర్లేదు. చాలా సరళంగా వుంది.

The Mighty and Mystical Rivers of India - Alaka Sankar

ఈ పుస్తకం యొక్క తెలుగు అనువాదం చదివాను నేను. భారతదేశం లోని వివిధ నదులు, వాటి పుట్టు పూర్వోత్తరాలు, పురాణాల్లో వాటి ప్రాశస్త్యం, వాటి పరీవాహక ప్రాంతాలు, అక్కడి పుణ్యక్షేత్రాలు, సంస్కృతులు, సంప్రదాయాలు మొదలయిన విశేషాల సమాహారం ఈ పుస్తకం. మనకి ఎంతో పవిత్రమయిన గంగ, యమున, గోదావరి, కృష్ణ లాంటి నదుల చరిత్ర, వాటి ఔన్నత్యం తెల్సుకోవడం ఎంతో బాగుంది.

ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారా మొత్తం భారతదేశం అంతటా ప్రవహించే నదుల గురించి చదవడం వలన అవి ప్రవహించే అన్ని ప్రాంతాల గురించి కూడా ఎన్నో ఆసక్తికరమయిన విషయాలను చదివి తెల్సుకోవచ్చు. అంతా చదివాక నాకు ఉత్తర భారత దేశ యాత్ర చేయాలన్న కోరిక ఇంకా ఎక్కువయ్యింది :) ఎప్పటికి తీరుతుందో మరి?

బెంగాలి నవలలు, కథలు - 1

దేవదాసు - శరత్ - ఈ కథ అందరికీ తెలిసిందే. పాతదో, కొత్తదో 'దేవదాసు' సినిమా చూడని వాళ్ళు వుండరేమో. అయితే ఈ సినిమా కి మూలమయిన నవల ఎలా వుంటుందో చదవాలన్న కోరిక నాకెప్పటి నుండో ఉండింది. నవల చదువుతున్నంత సేపు ఈ మధ్యే చూసిన హిందీ 'దేవదాసు' గుర్తొస్తూనే వుంది. సినిమాకి, నవల కి పెద్ద తేడా ఏమీ లేదు. కాకపోతే ఇప్పటి తరం వాళ్లకి ఆనాటి రచన చదవడం కంటే సినిమా చూస్తేనే నచ్చుతుందేమో. శరత్ రచనా శైలి మాత్రం చదివింపచేసేలా వుంది.

మజిలీ  దీదీ - శరత్ - ఇందులో మూడు కథలున్నాయి, మజిలి దీదీ, అణిగిన అహంకారం, కారుచీకటిలో కాంతిరేఖ - మొదటి కథ మజిలి దీదీ నచ్చింది నాకు. తల్లిని తండ్రిని పోగొట్టుకుని అనాధ అయిన కేప్టో సవతి సోదరి అయిన కాదంబిని పంచన చేరతాడు. వారి నిరాదరణకు గురి అయిన కేప్టో ని పక్కనే ఉంటున్న కాదంబిని తోడికోడలయిన హేమాంగిని అక్కున చేర్చుకుంటుంది. ఇది కిట్టని కాదంబిని హేమాంగి తో గొడవకి దిగడం తో రెండు కుటుంబాల మధ్య అంతకు ముందు నుండి వున్న మనస్పర్ధలు హెచ్చుతాయి. చివరకు హేమాంగిని ఇల్లు వదిలి వెళ్ళవలసిన పరిస్థితి వస్తుంది. అయినా సరే తను నమ్మిన దారిలో నడవడం కోసం భర్తని ఎదిరించి పోరాడి చివరకు కేప్టో ని ఆదరించేందుకు భర్త ని ఒప్పిస్తుంది. ఇక మిగతా రెండు కథలు పెద్దగా నచ్చలేదు. ఈ కథలన్నిటి లోనూ ఆనాటి బెంగాల్ రాష్ట్రం లోని జమిందారి పద్ధతులు, సంప్రదాయాలు, సంస్కృతి కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్టు వర్ణించారు రచయిత.

విష వృక్షం - బంకించంద్ర చటర్జీ - 'వందేమాతరం' రాసిన బంకింబాబు కలం నుండి జారువాలిన నవల ఇది. కుంద అనే ఒక అందమయిన యువతి జీవితం గురించిన కథ ఇది. అనాధ అయిన ఆమెను నాగేంద్రుడు (ఒక జమిందారు) చేరదీస్తాడు. మొదట్లో ఆమె పట్ల కేవలం జాలితో వ్యవహరించిన అతను కొద్ది రోజులకి ఆమెని ప్రేమించడం (ప్రేమించానని అనుకోవడం) మొదలు పెడతాడు. విషయం తెల్సిన అతని భార్య సూర్యముఖి పెద్ద మనసు తో ఇద్దరికీ పెళ్లి జరిపిస్తుంది. తర్వాత ఇల్లు వదిలి వెళ్ళిపోతుంది. కానీ కొద్ది రోజులకే నాగేంద్రుడు తనకు కుంద మీద వున్నది ప్రేమ కాదు అన్న విషయం గుర్తించి భార్య ని వెతుకుతూ తనూ ఇల్లు వదిలి వెళ్ళిపోతాడు. చివరికి భార్య భర్తలు కలుస్తారు కానీ కుంద ఒంటరి అయిపోతుంది. తర్వాత ఆమె ఏమయింది అనేది ముగింపు. ఈ కథ నాకేమీ నచ్చలేదు.

మొత్తానికి నేను చదివిన మూడు పుస్తకాలు నన్ను కొంచెం నిరాశ పరిచాయనే చెప్పాలి. చాలా దశాబ్దాల క్రితం నాటి రచనలు కాబట్టి నా బుర్ర కి సరిగ్గా ఎక్కలేదేమో మరి. అయినా సరే, ఇంకో మూడు పుస్తకాలున్నాయి (శరత్, బంకింబాబు వి)..అవి కూడా చదివేస్తాను.

విరాట్ - సైఫాన్ త్స్వైక్ - పొనుగోటి కృష్ణారెడ్డి

సైఫాన్ త్స్వైక్ ఆస్ట్రియా లో జన్మించిన ఒక సుప్రసిద్ధ రచయిత. తత్త్వశాస్త్రం అంటే ఎంతో మక్కువ కలిగిన ఆయన భారతీయ గ్రంధాలను, వేదాలను, ఉపనిషత్తులను, పురాణాలని అధ్యయనం చేసారు. ఈ పుస్తకం చదువుతున్నంత సేపు ఇది ఒక విదేశీ రచయిత కలం నుండి వెలువడింది అన్న అభిప్రాయం కలగదు మనకి. 60 - 70  పేజీల ఈ చిన్ని పుస్తకంలో జీవిత పరమార్ధం ఇమిడి వుంది.

విరాట్ అనే పేరుగల ఒక ధీరుడు ఒకానొక రాజ్యంలో ఉంటాడు. అతను తన జీవితంలో ఎదుర్కొన్న పరిస్థితులు, సంఘటనల వలన ఎలాంటి నిర్ణయాలు తీసుకున్నాడు, దాని వలన అతని జీవిత గమనం ఏ విధంగా మారింది, అతని ఆలోచనా దృక్పదం ఎలా సాగింది, చివరికి అతను అర్ధం చేసుకున్న తత్త్వం ఏమిటి అన్నదే ఈ పుస్తక సారాంశం. అనువాదం కూడా చాలా సరళంగా వుంది చదవడానికి ఎంతో తేలికగా వుంది. ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా ఈ పుస్తకం నలభై బాషల్లోకి translate చేయబడిందిట.

Confessions of an Economic Hitman - John Perkins : ఒక దళారీ పశ్చాత్తాపం - కొణతం దిలీప్

మూడేళ్ళ క్రితం HRF వాళ్ళు ముద్రించిన "విస్తాపన-విధ్వంసం" అనే పుస్తకం చదివాను. అందులో అభివృద్ధి పేరిట, సెజ్ ల పేరిట ఆది వాసీలకు, పేద ప్రజలకు, సహజ వనరులకు జరుగుతున్న అన్యాయం గురించి కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్టు రాసారు. నన్ను, నా ఆలోచనలని  ఎంతగానో ప్రభావితం చేసిన పుస్తకాల్లో అది ఒకటి. మన చుట్టూ జరుగుతోన్న (జరుగుతోందని మనం అనుకుంటున్న) అభివృద్ధి అనే నాణేనికి మరో వేపు ఏముందో తెలుస్తుంది ఈ పుస్తకం చదివాక.

ఇప్పుడు ఈ పుస్తకం "ఒక దళారీ పశ్చాత్తాపం" కూడా అదే కోవలోనికి వస్తుంది. HRF వాళ్ళ పుస్తకం మన రాష్ట్రం లో జరుగుతున్న దోపిడీ గురించి రాస్తే, ఈ పుస్తకం లో ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా జరుగుతున్న దోపిడీ గురించి రాసారు. అగ్ర రాజ్యంగా వెలుగుతోన్న అమెరికా చేసిన దురాగతాలను, అభివృద్ధి ముసుగులో మానవాళికి అది చేస్తున్న ద్రోహం గురించి ఈ పుస్తకం లో రాసారు.

ఈ పుస్తక రచయిత జాన్ పెర్కిన్స్ అమెరికా తరపున నియమించబడ్డ ఒక ఎకనామిక్ హిట్ మాన్ (ఇలాంటి ఒక పదం ఉంటుందని ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారానే తెల్సింది నాకు). చమురు నిక్షేపాలు పుష్కలంగా ఉన్న వెనుజులా, ఈక్వడార్, ఇరాన్, ఇరాక్, ఇండోనేసియా లాంటి దేశాల్లోని ప్రభుత్వాలని, ప్రజలని అభివృద్ధి పేరిట మభ్యపెట్టి ఆయా దేశాలు ఎప్పటికీ తీర్చలేని రుణాలిచ్చి వారిని తమకి (అమెరికా కి ) బానిసల్లా మార్చే ప్రక్రియ కోసం నియమింపబడ్డ వారే ఈ దళారులు. ఒకప్పుడు అమెరికా లో వుండిన బానిసత్వానికి ఇప్పుడు నాగరీకత, అభివృద్ధి పేరు చెప్పి కొత్త ముసుగు తొడుగుతున్నారు. అమెరికా పాటిస్తున్న రెండు నాల్కల ధోరణిని నగ్నంగా మన ముందు నిలబెడుతుంది ఈ పుస్తకం. గ్లోబల్ సామ్రాజ్య స్థాపన లో భాగంగా కార్పోరేట్ స్వామ్యం పీడిత దేశాలని ఎంత తెలివిగా దోచుకుంటుందో రచయిత ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారా చెప్పారు. ఈ దోపిడీలో భాగం గా మనం (మానవాళి) కోల్పోయిన సహజ (నదులూ, అడవులు), మానవ వనరులు, సంస్కృతులు, జీవ జాతుల గురించి తెల్సుకుంటూ వుంటే రేపటి తరానికి మనం ఏమి మిగిల్చి ఇస్తున్నాం అన్న ఆలోచన రాక మానదు. దీని గురించి సామాన్య ప్రజలమయిన మనం చేయగలిగినది ఏముంది అన్న ప్రశ్నకి సమాధానం ఏమిటి?

170 పేజీల ఈ పుస్తకం చదవడానికి నాకు రెండు వారాలు పట్టింది. ఇందులో రాసిన ఏ ఒక్క విషయం గురించి నాకు ఇంతకు ముందు ఎలాంటి అవగాహన లేకపోవడమే కారణం. ఇప్పటి వరకూ ప్రపంచం లో ఏ దేశం అయినా కరెన్సీ ని ముద్రించుకోవడానికి అందుకు సరిపడా బంగారు నిలువలనో, లేక వనరులనో చూపించాలని విన్నాను. కానీ అమెరికా అలాంటి రూల్ ఏదీ పాటించకుండా కరెన్సీ ని ముద్రించి ప్రపంచ దేశాలకి అప్పులిస్తుందని ఇందులో చదివి ఆశ్చర్యపోయాను. ఇదేమి న్యాయం. ఎవరూ అడగరా?

తెలుగు అనువాదం చాలా సరళంగా సాగింది. మానవాళి విధ్వంసానికి కారణమయ్యే  ఈ అభివృద్ధి (???) అనే ఊబిలో మనం రోజు రోజుకీ ఎలా కూరుకుపోతున్నామో తెల్సుకోవాలంటే ఈ పుస్తకం చదివి తీరాల్సిందే.

ఒక హిజ్రా కథ - పరవస్తు లోకేశ్వర్

ఉర్దూ, హిందీ భాషలలోని 8 కథలను పరవస్తు లోకేశ్వర్ గారు అనువదించి ఈ పుస్తక రూపం లో అందించారు. ఇందులో మూడు కథలు కుష్వంత్ సింగ్ రాసినవి కాగా మిగతా అయిదూ వేరు వేరు రచయితలు రాసినవి. కుష్వంత్ సింగ్ రాసిన మూడు కథలూ 17 - 18 శతాబ్దాలలో మొఘల్ సామ్రాజ్యం మరియూ సిపాయి తిరుగుబాటు ల నేపధ్యాలలో రాసినవి. చరిత్ర గురించి తెలుసుకోవాలంటే కేవలం చరిత్ర పుస్తకాలు చదివితే సరిపోదు. ఎందుకంటే అందులో రాజులు, వాళ్ళ పాలనా విధానాలు, జరిగిన యుద్ధాలు, ఆస్తుల లెక్కలు, రాజకీయ ఒప్పందాలు, తారీఖులు ఇవి మాత్రమే వుంటాయి. అప్పటి కాలంలో ప్రజల మనోభావాలు, సంఘర్షణలు కూడా చరిత్రలో భాగమే. ఇవి దాదాపుగా ఏ చరిత్ర పుస్తకంలోనూ కనిపించవు. ఇవి తెల్సుకోవాలంటే అప్పటి కాలం లో జీవించిన సామాన్యుల కథలు చదవాలి. ఈ మూడు కథల లోనూ  అప్పటి ప్రజల జీవన విధానాలు, ఆలోచనలు, యుద్ధాల వలన వాళ్ళ జీవితాల్లో వచ్చిన పెను మార్పులూ అన్నీ చక్కగా వర్ణించబడ్డాయి.

ఇక మిగతా కథలలో నాకు మొదటి కథ 'గృహ నిర్మాత' , రెండవ కథ ' పరువు-ప్రతిష్ట' బాగా నచ్చాయి. మొదటి కథలో వేశ్య అయిన లాజ్వంతి వివాహం ద్వారా స్వేచ్ఛను కోల్పోతే (సమాజం లో ఒక గౌరవమయిన స్థానం పొందినప్పటికీ వ్యక్తిగత స్వేచ్ఛను కోల్పోతుంది), రెండవ కథలో పటాన్ల అమ్మాయి స్వేచ్ఛగా జీవించగలిగి ఉండి కూడా  మనసిచ్చిన వాడి కోసం, కుటుంబ పరువు కోసం వివాహం మాట తలపెట్టకుండా తనకు తానే సంకెళ్ళు వేసుకుని జీవితమంతా గడిపేస్తుంది. విభిన్న పరిస్థితులలో ఉన్న ఇద్దరు ఆడవాళ్ళ సంఘర్షణకి ఈ రెండు కథలూ అద్దం పడతాయి. ఇక అనుకోని పరిస్థితులలో హిజ్రాగా మారిన మైనా కథ కంట తడి పెట్టిస్తుంది.

భాష కూడా సరళంగా ఉండి చదవడానికి తేలికగానే ఉంది.

Naakoo vundi oka kala – Dr Verghese Kurien

This’s the telugu translated version of the book ‘I too had a dream’ , an auto-biographical novel written by Dr.Varghese Kurien. He’s the father of  the White Revolution in India. For even more clearer picture just think of Amul – The Taste of India. Yes, he’s the man behind this brand.

Dr.Varghese Kurien, after finishing his masters in Engineering in the US of A returned to India in 1949 and started working as a dairy engineer in a govt based milk production company in Anand, a small village in Gujarat. He gets attracted to the local milk co-operative society formed by a group of farmers headed by Mr.Tribhuvandas Patel. Due to inefficient collection and distribution systems and interference of middlemen, milk co-operative societies were not producing any profits to the producers. Dr. Kurien determined to change this picture and started building the co-operative society from scratch. Since then, there was no turning back. He dedicated 50 years of his life to pursue his dream of acheiving empowerment to poor farmers in India. Initially he had to fight with private companies, bureaucrats, politicians and some multinational companies like Nestle, but his efforts and strong determination transformed India into number one milk producer in the world.
This  book describes his work, experiences and acheivements. An inspiring read for people who truly want to contribute something to the society and country.

Telugu translation is done by Dr Tummala Padmini and Dr Atthaluri Narasimha Rao.
For his contribution to dairy industry, Dr Kurien received so many awards in India and overseas. Ramon Magsaysay award (1963), Padmasri(1965), Padmabhushan(1966), Padmavibhushan(1999),  Wateler peace prize (1986) are just few among them.

Ditavu Gundelu – Dmitry Medvedev – Uppala Lakshama Rao

I don’t  know the English title of this original version, this book is written by Russian author Dmitry Medvedev (not sure whether he is the one who’s the current President of Russia) and the telugu translation from English was done by Uppala Lakshmana Rao.


Soviet Russia has a great history for its fight aganist the Naazees. This’s the story of Russian Gourilla war fighters during the second world war. It gives you an insight of the events in the gourilla war that took place in the Saarni forest areas and Ukranian towns during the years 1942-1948.

I am not very good at reading and memorizing the Russian names and this book has too many characters, so it was a tough read for me memorizing the names,places and events and reading further. Otherwise the transalation is good.

Papillon – Rekkalu chaachina panjaram (Part 1)

Papillon is a french autobiographic novel written by Henry Charriere. It has been translated to telugu in two parts by Dr M.V.Ramana Reddy.

Henry, at the age of 25, is sentenced wrongly for a murder he didn’t commit. He plans to take revenge on the people responsible for his imprisonment, the judge, prosecutor and the police officers involved. He’s moved to a prison in French Guiana from where he escapes with a couple of his friends. They travel across the Atlantic to Trinidad and Cuaraco seeking asylum. But the immigration authorities deny their request and advise them to go to either Columbia or Venezuela. They get sighted near Columbian coastline by the coastal police and land in the prison once again. He escapes from this prison again and reaches an island in Guajira Peninsula where he meets the local native americans. They provide him shelter and he lives there for about 6 months regaining his mental and physical health.  During his stay, he gets married to two native american women Laali and Joraija.
But his plan for revenge remains unexecuted. So he leaves the island and soon gets caught and imprisoned in Santa Marta and from there he’s moved to Baranquilla where he meets his former friends. He makes nurmerous attempts to escape, but fails. He’s finally taken back to French Guiana and handed over to the authorities. Here ends the first part.

The brutal French penal system during 1930s, Henry’s suffering and anguish during his period of captivation are narrated very well. You’ll get impressed by Henry’s will power to secure freedom and his courage to fight against the odds. In short, this book can be described as a struggle of a wrongly convicted innocent victim for freedom. And the French, Spanish and native american backdrop is refreshing.

I was told that the second part describes how Henry gets free from prison and settle down in Venezuela.Did not find it in local book shops. Have to search in online stores.

Vanaseemalalo – Maheedhara Nalini Mohan (telugu translator)

‘Vanaseemalalo’ is the telugu translated version of the book ‘Bambi – A Life in woods’ written by Felix Jalten in 1924.

Bambi is the story of a roe deer who lives in the forest with his mom. It’s all about his exploration of life in woods. It’s an animal story told in the perspective of animals. All the animals in this story can speak and in one chapter, two leaves speak too before their peril. Of all the animal stories I read so far, this one is a total contrast. The description is so real and there’s no silly talking at all. The relationship between man, animals and nature told from the perspective of a deer is very well written.

This book seems to be a child’s read from its look, but it is not just for children. So many issues like life,death,relationships etc are dealt in a truly inspiring manner.

It’s a delightful read for me

Pather Paanchaali – Bibhuthibhushan Bandhopaadhyaaya

‘Pather Paanchaali’ which means ‘Song of the Road’ is a Bengaali novel written by Bibhuthibhushan Bandhopaadhyaaya during 1928-1929. This novel has been picturized by Sathyajithray in 1955 with the same name, which will always remain as a classic in the Indian film industry.

The story revolves around a poor Brahmin family in the village of Nischindapur in Bengal state. Harihara Roy, a priest lives in his ancestral home with his wife Sarbojaya, daugther Durga, son Apu(the main character in this novel) and a distant relative Indira. Sarbojaya and Indira doesn’t get along well and Indira faces a tragic death. Apu and Durga share an affectionate brother-sister relationship. Despite of their poverty the children derive joy from simple treasures in their village life.

Most of the story is about Apu. His growth from an infant to a young man discovering the world around him is narrated in a heart-touching way. The rural Bengal life is depicted wonderfully and this book takes you back to your childhood memories.

I’ve also read a couple of other books written by this author – Vanavaasi and Chander Pahaar. This book Pather Paanchaali has been transalated to telugu by Maddipatla Suri.

Chander Pahaar - Moon Mountain

This is the story of a Bengaali youngster’s adventures.

Shankar, after graduation, when he was about to take up a job in his native place, gets a chance to travel to Uganda and work for their railway track construction. He readily accepts the offer and travels to Africa. Initially he works as a layman where he first encounters man-eating lions. Later he gets promoted as a station master of a remote and isolated railway station. Here he comes across the black mamba. He rescues a portugese traveller and gets influenced by his adventures through the African forests and deserts. Shankar resigns to his job and both of them start off their journey to explore the diamond mines in Africa. They face so many life threatening dangers in the forest. One day, the portugese traveller is killed by a monster Bunip. From there onwards Shankar is all alone and he searches for a way out into the normal world. And the rest of the story is about his journey through the Kalahaari desert and the diamond mines and finally back to his home.

This book was written by the famous Bengaali writer Bhibuti Bhushan Bandyopaadyaay, the one who wrote Pather Panchaali, Vanavaasi (Aranyak) etc. I haven’t come across Pather Paanchaali yet, but I happened to read his another book Vanavaasi. And this book Chander Pahaar is not that famous as his other two books, but I loved this book too much. A 200% adventerous thriller, takes you to a totally different world.

My comfort reads

This is the list of books I read over and over and never ever get bored…and all these books were introduced to me by Peddi


1. Adventures of Tom Sawyer – Mark Twain
This’s a 125 year old release….I think I’ve read it for the first time when I was around 10-11 yrs…Fell in love with Tom instantaneously This story is all about a 12 year old mischievous boy Tom, living in a village called St.Petersburgh near river Mississippi in USA with his aunt Polly and cousin brother Sid…He’s so smart and active…his puppy love with Rebecca Thatcher, their break up, the re-union, getting lost in a cave later …his adventures with his friends Joe Harper and Huckleberry Fin, how they escape to an island to become pirates and then return home surprising everyone, the treasure hunt by him and Huck…and the following incidents…..penned down in the most simple and easy to read language….all in all, a 200% entertainer…

2. Chuk and Gek – A. Gaidar
This is a story about two twin boys Chuk and Gek living in Moscow with their mother…Their father works for the army somewhere in the Siberian jungle…he invites his family to join him during the holidays, and the rest of the story is about their (Chuk-Gek-Mom) journey thru snow mountains n forests to meet their dad…I once upon a time was so crazy about these two characters, that I wanted to name my future kids Chuk-Gek (two boys); Chuk-Chukki (a girl and a boy); Chukku-Chukki (two girls)

3. Seryosha – Telugu Transalation

This story is about a 6 year old boy, Seryosha living with his mother, step-father, aunt and uncle in Russia….When initially his step-dad enters into their lives, this lil boy feels so insecured and this increases multi-fold when his mom gives birth to his step-brother…and rest of the story is all about how his step-dad wins over Seryosha’s love n confidence….

4. Little girl at the Window - Tetsuko Kuroyanaagi
This novel is about a lil girl Totto Chan…a hyper-active n mischievous girl…She recollects her elementary education, particularly at an experimental school run in unused train compartments by Mr Kobayashi in Japan before World War – II…the school was destroyed in US bombing…most of the story revolves around Children’s psychology and innovative/novel concepts of teaching.

5. Koolina Godalu – Ranganaayakamma
This is the first telugu novel I read….during my 5th std summer holidays I’d been to Usha attamma’s mom’s place in Krishna Dt…borrowed this book from the local library…This story is about a young boy Madhu who loses his parents when he’s just 7…he stays at his maternal uncles’ home with his elder brother Sooryam and lil sister Suseela, and the rest of the story is about their plight in a joint family, how their ammamma supports them whilst their aunts ill-treat…at the end of the story all the three kids settle down happily….

So these are my top 5 favourite books, which I resort to whenever I feel low and sad Annee pillala gurinchina kathalu
