పాలగుమ్మి విశ్వనాథం - ఆత్మకథ

ప్రముఖ రచయిత, సాహిత్య అకాడెమీ అవార్డు గ్రహీత అయిన పాలగుమ్మి పద్మరాజు గారి తమ్ముడు శ్రీ పాలగుమ్మి విశ్వనాథం గారు. పశ్చిమ గోదావరి జిల్లా లోని తిరుపతిపురం అనే ఊరిలో 1919 సంవత్సరం లో జన్మించిన విశ్వనాథం గారు తెలుగు వారి ముంగిట్లోకి AIR ద్వారా లలిత సంగీతాన్ని తీసుకువచ్చిన ఆద్యులు. ఈయన స్వరకర్త, గాయకుడు, వీణా విద్వాంసులు కూడా."అమ్మ దొంగా..నిన్ను చూడకుంటే నాకు బెంగా" అన్న పాట (ఈయన రచించి, స్వరపరిచినది..వేదవతి ప్రభాకర్ గారు పాడింది) ఇప్పటికీ తెలుగు వారి లోగిళ్ళలో వినిపిస్తూనే వుంటుంది..ఇంకా ఇలాంటివే ఎన్నో మధురమయిన పాటలు ఎన్నింటినో పరిచయం చేసిన విశ్వనాథం గారి ఆత్మ కథ ఎంతో బావుంది.

గోదావరి జిల్లాలో ఆయన గడిపిన బాల్యం, గాంధీజీ గారు చేప్పట్టిన హరిజనోద్ధరణ ఉద్యమం లో విశ్వనాథం గారి బాబయ్య గారి పాత్ర గురించిన వివరాలు ఎంతో ఆసక్తి కలించాయి. తర్వాత విశ్వనాథం గారి సాహిత్య అభిలాష, సంగీత సాధన కోసం చెన్నై వెళ్ళడం, అక్కడ గొప్ప గొప్ప విద్వాంసులతో పరిచయాలు, సినీ రంగం లో ఆయన పాత్ర, అక్కడి నుండి ఆకాశవాణి హైదరాబాద్ కేంద్రం లో ఉద్యోగం ఇవన్నీ ఆయన మాటల్లో వివరించారు. ఆకాశవాణి లో పనిచేసేటప్పుడు దేవులపల్లి కృష్ణ శాస్త్రి గారి లాంటి ప్రముఖులతో సాహచర్యం ఏర్పడింది విశ్వనాథం గారికి.కృష్ణ శాస్త్రి గారు రాసిన ఎన్నో పాటలకు విశ్వనాథం గారు స్వరాలు సమకూర్చారు. వీరిద్దరి కలయికలో వచ్చిన సంగీత రూపకాలకు నేటికీ ఎంతో మంది అభిమానులున్నారు. తెలుగు సంగీతం లో ప్రముఖులయిన వారెంతో మంది ఒకప్పుడు విశ్వనాథం గారి దగ్గర శిష్యరికం చేసిన వారే.ఆకాశవాణి లో పదవీ విరమణ అనంతరం క్రైస్తవ మత బోధకుడయిన హ్యుబర్ట్ సికింద్రాబాద్ లో స్థాపించిన అమృతవాణి కైస్తవ మిషన్ కి భక్తి గీతాలు సమకూర్చారు విశ్వనాథం గారు.

తెలుగు జాతి రత్నాలలో ఒకరిగా ఎన్నదగిన పాలగుమ్మి విశ్వనాథం గారిని రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం ఎన్నో అవార్డులతో సత్కరించింది. ఈ ఆత్మకథ సంకలనం చదవడం ద్వారా మరుగున పడిన ఆకాశవాణి జ్ఞాపకాలు మదిని పలకరించాయి.

ఈ పుస్తకం యొక్క తెలుగు అనువాదం చదివాను నేను. భారతదేశం లోని వివిధ నదులు, వాటి పుట్టు పూర్వోత్తరాలు, పురాణాల్లో వాటి ప్రాశస్త్యం, వాటి పరీవాహక ప్రాంతాలు, అక్కడి పుణ్యక్షేత్రాలు, సంస్కృతులు, సంప్రదాయాలు మొదలయిన విశేషాల సమాహారం ఈ పుస్తకం. మనకి ఎంతో పవిత్రమయిన గంగ, యమున, గోదావరి, కృష్ణ లాంటి నదుల చరిత్ర, వాటి ఔన్నత్యం తెల్సుకోవడం ఎంతో బాగుంది.

ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారా మొత్తం భారతదేశం అంతటా ప్రవహించే నదుల గురించి చదవడం వలన అవి ప్రవహించే అన్ని ప్రాంతాల గురించి కూడా ఎన్నో ఆసక్తికరమయిన విషయాలను చదివి తెల్సుకోవచ్చు. అంతా చదివాక నాకు ఉత్తర భారత దేశ యాత్ర చేయాలన్న కోరిక ఇంకా ఎక్కువయ్యింది :) ఎప్పటికి తీరుతుందో మరి?

Confessions of an Economic Hitman - John Perkins : ఒక దళారీ పశ్చాత్తాపం - కొణతం దిలీప్

మూడేళ్ళ క్రితం HRF వాళ్ళు ముద్రించిన "విస్తాపన-విధ్వంసం" అనే పుస్తకం చదివాను. అందులో అభివృద్ధి పేరిట, సెజ్ ల పేరిట ఆది వాసీలకు, పేద ప్రజలకు, సహజ వనరులకు జరుగుతున్న అన్యాయం గురించి కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్టు రాసారు. నన్ను, నా ఆలోచనలని  ఎంతగానో ప్రభావితం చేసిన పుస్తకాల్లో అది ఒకటి. మన చుట్టూ జరుగుతోన్న (జరుగుతోందని మనం అనుకుంటున్న) అభివృద్ధి అనే నాణేనికి మరో వేపు ఏముందో తెలుస్తుంది ఈ పుస్తకం చదివాక.

ఇప్పుడు ఈ పుస్తకం "ఒక దళారీ పశ్చాత్తాపం" కూడా అదే కోవలోనికి వస్తుంది. HRF వాళ్ళ పుస్తకం మన రాష్ట్రం లో జరుగుతున్న దోపిడీ గురించి రాస్తే, ఈ పుస్తకం లో ప్రపంచ వ్యాప్తంగా జరుగుతున్న దోపిడీ గురించి రాసారు. అగ్ర రాజ్యంగా వెలుగుతోన్న అమెరికా చేసిన దురాగతాలను, అభివృద్ధి ముసుగులో మానవాళికి అది చేస్తున్న ద్రోహం గురించి ఈ పుస్తకం లో రాసారు.

ఈ పుస్తక రచయిత జాన్ పెర్కిన్స్ అమెరికా తరపున నియమించబడ్డ ఒక ఎకనామిక్ హిట్ మాన్ (ఇలాంటి ఒక పదం ఉంటుందని ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారానే తెల్సింది నాకు). చమురు నిక్షేపాలు పుష్కలంగా ఉన్న వెనుజులా, ఈక్వడార్, ఇరాన్, ఇరాక్, ఇండోనేసియా లాంటి దేశాల్లోని ప్రభుత్వాలని, ప్రజలని అభివృద్ధి పేరిట మభ్యపెట్టి ఆయా దేశాలు ఎప్పటికీ తీర్చలేని రుణాలిచ్చి వారిని తమకి (అమెరికా కి ) బానిసల్లా మార్చే ప్రక్రియ కోసం నియమింపబడ్డ వారే ఈ దళారులు. ఒకప్పుడు అమెరికా లో వుండిన బానిసత్వానికి ఇప్పుడు నాగరీకత, అభివృద్ధి పేరు చెప్పి కొత్త ముసుగు తొడుగుతున్నారు. అమెరికా పాటిస్తున్న రెండు నాల్కల ధోరణిని నగ్నంగా మన ముందు నిలబెడుతుంది ఈ పుస్తకం. గ్లోబల్ సామ్రాజ్య స్థాపన లో భాగంగా కార్పోరేట్ స్వామ్యం పీడిత దేశాలని ఎంత తెలివిగా దోచుకుంటుందో రచయిత ఈ పుస్తకం ద్వారా చెప్పారు. ఈ దోపిడీలో భాగం గా మనం (మానవాళి) కోల్పోయిన సహజ (నదులూ, అడవులు), మానవ వనరులు, సంస్కృతులు, జీవ జాతుల గురించి తెల్సుకుంటూ వుంటే రేపటి తరానికి మనం ఏమి మిగిల్చి ఇస్తున్నాం అన్న ఆలోచన రాక మానదు. దీని గురించి సామాన్య ప్రజలమయిన మనం చేయగలిగినది ఏముంది అన్న ప్రశ్నకి సమాధానం ఏమిటి?

170 పేజీల ఈ పుస్తకం చదవడానికి నాకు రెండు వారాలు పట్టింది. ఇందులో రాసిన ఏ ఒక్క విషయం గురించి నాకు ఇంతకు ముందు ఎలాంటి అవగాహన లేకపోవడమే కారణం. ఇప్పటి వరకూ ప్రపంచం లో ఏ దేశం అయినా కరెన్సీ ని ముద్రించుకోవడానికి అందుకు సరిపడా బంగారు నిలువలనో, లేక వనరులనో చూపించాలని విన్నాను. కానీ అమెరికా అలాంటి రూల్ ఏదీ పాటించకుండా కరెన్సీ ని ముద్రించి ప్రపంచ దేశాలకి అప్పులిస్తుందని ఇందులో చదివి ఆశ్చర్యపోయాను. ఇదేమి న్యాయం. ఎవరూ అడగరా?

తెలుగు అనువాదం చాలా సరళంగా సాగింది. మానవాళి విధ్వంసానికి కారణమయ్యే  ఈ అభివృద్ధి (???) అనే ఊబిలో మనం రోజు రోజుకీ ఎలా కూరుకుపోతున్నామో తెల్సుకోవాలంటే ఈ పుస్తకం చదివి తీరాల్సిందే.

ఇదీ నా కథ - మల్లెమాల

మల్లెమాల గారి గురించి తలచుకోగానే నాకు గుర్తొచ్చేవి రెండే విషయాలు, అంకుశం సినిమాలో ఆయన రోల్, బాల రామాయణం సినిమా. ఆయన్ని చూస్తే పాత కాలం లో వుండే స్ట్రిక్ట్ ప్రధానోపాధ్యాయుడు గుర్తొస్తారు. ఈ మధ్య ఆయన తన గురించి రాసుకున్న ఈ పుస్తకం గురించి చాలా వార్తలే విన్నాను.ఇలాంటివి విన్న కొద్దీ చదవాలన్న ఆసక్తి పెరుగుతుంది కదా. పైగా మా జిల్లా ఆయన కదా, ఇక చదవాలనే అనుకున్నాను. అమ్మమ్మ దగ్గర ఈ పుస్తకం వుంది, చదివేసాను.

మల్లెమాల గారు కవి అని తెల్సు కానీ ఎప్పుడూ ఆయన రాసిన గేయాలు, గట్రా చదవలేదు. ఈ పుస్తకంలో చదువుతున్నప్పుడు హై-స్కూల్ చదువు కూడా లేకపోయినా ఇంత బాగా ఛందస్సు, వ్యాకరణం మీద పట్టు సాధించడం చాలా గొప్ప విషయమే అనిపించింది. ఇక ఆయన మనసు విప్పి తన గురించి చెప్పుకున్న విషయాలలో ఎక్కువ భాగం తను సాధించిన విజయాల గురించే వున్నా కూడా ఏంటో చాలా మామూలుగా చెప్పినట్టే వుంది కానీ కావాలని తన గురించి తాను ఎక్కువ చేసి గొప్పలు చెప్పుకున్నట్టు లేదు. రామారావు, శోభన్ బాబు, గుణశేఖర్, బుజ్జి రామారావు (Jr NTR ), శ్యాం ప్రసాద్ రెడ్డి -  వీళ్ళందరి గురించి విమర్శించారు. వీళ్ళంతా కూడా మనకి ఒక రకమయిన వ్యక్తులుగానే తెలుసు, కానీ ప్రతి ఒక్కరిలో వేరు వేరు కోణాలున్నట్టే వీరి జీవితంలో కూడా మనకి తెలీని చాలానే విషయాలు జరిగి ఉండి ఉండవచ్చు. మల్లెమాల గారు తనకి ఎదురయిన చెడు అనుభవాలు వ్యక్తపరిచే  క్రమంలో వీళ్ళ పేర్లు బయటకి వచ్చాయి, అంతే. ఇవి నిజాలా కాదా అనేది నేను పట్టించుకోను. ఆయా వ్యక్తుల మీద నాకు అంతకు ముందున్న అభిప్రాయం ఇవి చదివాక మారదు కూడా :)

మొత్తం మీద పుస్తకం అయితే బాగుంది.

Yugaaniki Okkadu – Vinayaka Rao

Yugaaniki okkadu – The one and only one name that strikes my mind when I hear this word is none other than our legendary actor NTR. Though he’s equally popular as the founder and leader of TDP, I remember him just as a great actor. I know nothing about his political career and I’m not at all interested in it and may be this’s  the reason why I prefer to be a fan of his acting skills and have no particular impression on his political life. People in my home worship him as a demi-god. I still remember the day he passed away. My uncle cried out like hell and my other relatives were left in deep shock


Coming to this book, this is all about NTR’s filmy career – his movies, heroines, cine records, his relation and dealings with technicians, producers, directors and some interesting info about his mannerisms in some movies and all that sort of articles. Some rare photographs have also been included. This’s would be a good library collective for hardcore NTR fans. Otherwise, there’s nothing spl abt it. Just a one-time read may be.

In this book, each of these women narrate their  experiences, feelings, hardships they’ve faced and struggle to identify themselves in their chosen field of art.

Not a casual read, go for it only if you are interested to know about different forms of art and artists, their experiences and all.

This book was gifted to me by Volga and Kutumbarao garu on my wedding day And it took more than 7 years for me to open and go thru it

Nigaah – K.Balagopal

This book is  a collection of 115 articles written by Dr K Balagopal for the magazine ‘Prajathanthra’ during the years 1998-2003. This’s the first part and the rest of the articles are yet to be compiled into part-2 of this book.

All these articles are the authors’ comments about various issues ranging from tribals to international affairs. There’s absolutely no subject that’s untouched here. Aadivaasis, Riots, Naxals, Govt policies, Tibetans, India-Pak war, 9/11 in US of A, Telangana, Agriculture, Irrigation projects, Religious affairs etc…everything is discussed in this book. I haven’t got proper knowledge regarding any of these issues, also all the incidents that’ve been quoted in this book occured about a decade ago, so it was a tough read for me.

History of India – Romila Thapar

This book details the history of India in ancient and medieval ages. It starts with the Iron age civilization and ends with the declination of Mughal empire in the 18th century after the arrival of British. In the very first chapter the author describes how man in Iron age transformed from a food gatherer to a food producer.

Indus valley /Sind civilization, Mohenjadaro-Harappa cities and their infrastructure, Aryan civilization are described in the next few chapters. The emergence and declination of some famous empires like Magadha, Mourya, Gupta, Pallava, Chola, Chera, Pandya, Satavaahana, Mughal etc are detailed. The social, cultural, economical, political and geographical conditions prevalent in each era are discussed. Some religious aspects in Buddhism, Jainism and Islam are also presented.

This book is just about 178 pages, but it gives you an overall picture of entire history of ancient and medieval India. A delighful read for history lovers

Naakoo vundi oka kala – Dr Verghese Kurien

This’s the telugu translated version of the book ‘I too had a dream’ , an auto-biographical novel written by Dr.Varghese Kurien. He’s the father of  the White Revolution in India. For even more clearer picture just think of Amul – The Taste of India. Yes, he’s the man behind this brand.

Dr.Varghese Kurien, after finishing his masters in Engineering in the US of A returned to India in 1949 and started working as a dairy engineer in a govt based milk production company in Anand, a small village in Gujarat. He gets attracted to the local milk co-operative society formed by a group of farmers headed by Mr.Tribhuvandas Patel. Due to inefficient collection and distribution systems and interference of middlemen, milk co-operative societies were not producing any profits to the producers. Dr. Kurien determined to change this picture and started building the co-operative society from scratch. Since then, there was no turning back. He dedicated 50 years of his life to pursue his dream of acheiving empowerment to poor farmers in India. Initially he had to fight with private companies, bureaucrats, politicians and some multinational companies like Nestle, but his efforts and strong determination transformed India into number one milk producer in the world.
This  book describes his work, experiences and acheivements. An inspiring read for people who truly want to contribute something to the society and country.

Telugu translation is done by Dr Tummala Padmini and Dr Atthaluri Narasimha Rao.
For his contribution to dairy industry, Dr Kurien received so many awards in India and overseas. Ramon Magsaysay award (1963), Padmasri(1965), Padmabhushan(1966), Padmavibhushan(1999),  Wateler peace prize (1986) are just few among them.

Ditavu Gundelu – Dmitry Medvedev – Uppala Lakshama Rao

I don’t  know the English title of this original version, this book is written by Russian author Dmitry Medvedev (not sure whether he is the one who’s the current President of Russia) and the telugu translation from English was done by Uppala Lakshmana Rao.


Soviet Russia has a great history for its fight aganist the Naazees. This’s the story of Russian Gourilla war fighters during the second world war. It gives you an insight of the events in the gourilla war that took place in the Saarni forest areas and Ukranian towns during the years 1942-1948.

I am not very good at reading and memorizing the Russian names and this book has too many characters, so it was a tough read for me memorizing the names,places and events and reading further. Otherwise the transalation is good.

Tribal Women in development – Dr Lipi Mukhopadhyay

My interest in the life-style of tribal women began when I was reading some case-studies/fact finding reports published by the Human Rights Commission, regarding the attrocities against the tribal people. I personally feel that tribal women are far more efficient, confident and independent when compared to the women in urban/rural areas. They play a siginificant role in the socio-economic structure of their society. They enjoy more freedom regarding their marriage/personal lives than their counterparts in non-tribal regions.


This book is an analytical study of cultural,social, economic and political life of tribal women in India. Their role in agriculture, forestry, industrial areas, arts and crafts are discussed. Various case studies of tribal women across different regions of India are presented.Their beliefs, traditions and life-styles are detailed. Enviromental degradation and exploitation of non-tribal people are making lives of tribal women difficult now a days. The author finally discussed some measures to be taken for the upliftment of tribal women.

Not a casual,timepass read. Go for it only if you are interested in this particular subject.

Asthaminchani Ravi – Khader Mohiuddin

‘Asthaminchani Ravi’ is the biography of Paritaala Ravi written by Khader Mohiuddin.

This book gives you an insight of Ravi’s life. His father Paritaala Sreeramulu’s involvement in Peoples War Naxalite group, how’s he’s assassinated, Ravi’s interest in agriculture, his undesired entry into naxalite movement and then to politics, his political career, his rivalry with Maddela Cheruvu Suri etc are discussed. The author tried to present Ravi as a revolutionist and not a hardcore factionist as known to the world.
An interesting read for people who love political biographies.

This book is a compilation of speeches delivered by Late Dr.K.Balagopal, who’s a well known human rights activist in AP. There are totally 9 topics including the Aalmetti dam issue, Naxalite movement, SEZs in AP, Economic development in China, US war policy in Afghanisthan and Iraq.

This book provides an insight into the AP state/Indian polit(r)ics relating to the above topics. The author has an extensive knowledge of the social, economic and political scenarios in AP. He analyzed each and every topic after thorough investigation through his fact finding programmes in the respective areas.
